The
value of issued building permits in Kimberley over the last decade has
been similar to the rest of British Columbia with high levels of
activity from 2005 to 2007 and lessening in 2008 and 2009 with weaker
economic conditions worldwide. Recent building activity has been less
focused on new housing starts while renovation projects have grown.
With the recent construction of the new Kimberley Conference and Training Centre, building permit values are expected to surge once again in
2011-12.
Large multiple unit projects have a significant influence on building permit totals in a given year. The $15.5 million value of commercial permits in 1999, for example, was greater than the total of all permits issued in Kimberley in any of the following five years. This large number is associated with the construction of new facilities at the Kimberley Alpine Resort.
