LOCAL PROGRAMS & SERVICES: Active Community Guide Cover

recreation

Kimberley has maintained a friendly, small town atmosphere. The citizens demonstrate great community spirit with their active volunteerism and participation in community festivals and events. Recreational pursuits include world-class skiing at the Kimberley Alpine Resort and on the Nordic trail system; fishing in the many mountain lakes, streams, and rivers; hiking the Purcell or Rocky Mountains or golfing one of Kimberley’s three championship golf courses. The community has a new aquatic centre and a full complement of sports, recreational and cultural programs for all ages.

Outdoor enthusiasts can participate in a wide variety of trail recreation opportunities on Kimberley's hundreds of kilometers of trails as well as those in the surrounding area. The Kimberley Nature Park rises from an elevation of 975 meters along the St. Mary Lake Road to over 1600 meters on the shoulder of North Star Mountain. This park is over 800 hectares (that is two times the size of Stanley Park ) and features more than 100 kilometers of trails displaying a diverse landscape of hills, ridges, valleys and plateaus. Whether you are seeking a thrilling technical ride or family outing, you will find what you are looking for.

The Lois Creek Trails located adjacent to the Townsite and Morrison subdivisions are a mixture of double and single track weaving through mature forest, rock outcroppings and along the Lois Creek.  These trails are popular for biking and hiking as well as cross-country skiing in the winter months.

The NorthStar Rails to Trails is an abandoned CP railway track between Kimberley and Cranbrook that has been removed and converted to a paved trail for running, walking, biking and blading.  The Kimberley end of the trail begins across the street from the Civic Centre on Rotary Drive, winding its way to Marysville before heading into the valley toward Cranbrook.

Kayaking and whitewater rafting are popular attractions. Hot springs, beaches and boating are also within easy reach. Baseball, slo-pitch, soccer, hockey, speed skating, figure skating - whatever takes your fancy, you'll find it here.
